What to Expect at Your First Paint & Release Session
Trying something new can feel exciting — and sometimes a little uncertain.
If you’re considering joining a Paint & Release session, you might have questions about what to expect.
Below we walk you through frequently asked questions so you can arrive feeling comfortable, open, and ready to explore.
What if I'm nervous?
That's completely normal.
Trying something new can feel exciting, uncertain, or even a little vulnerable. Especially, if you’re coming on your own.
Many people arrive wondering if they'll know what to do or whether they'll fit in.
Those feelings usually soften within the first few minutes.
You don't need to have anything figured out before you come.
Curiosity is enough.
Do I Need Art Experience?
Not at all.
You don't need artistic experience, and you don't need to think of yourself as "creative."
Many participants haven't painted since childhood. Others have never painted at all.
One of the most freeing parts of the experience is that you don't need to know what you're going to paint. Rather than starting with an idea in your mind, you'll be invited to follow your body's natural curiosity through color, movement, and exploration.
Throughout the experience, I'll offer gentle guidance and creative prompts designed to help you explore color, movement, and curiosity.
This experience isn't about creating a perfect painting.
It's about giving yourself permission to explore without judgment.
There is no right answer. No artistic ability required. Just permission to explore.
Most people are surprised by how naturally the process unfolds once they begin.
What Actually Happens During a Session?
Sessions are designed to feel relaxed, supportive, and unstructured in the best way — you’ll be guided, but never pressured. Each session follows a gentle flow designed to help you slow down and settle into the creative process.
Arrive and settle into the space
Short introduction, grounding, and gentle guidance
Creative prompts to explore color and movement
Open painting time for personal expression
Closing grounding and Integration
Optional share (not required and low-pressure)
Every participant’s painting experience will be unique. There’s no right or wrong way to move through the process.

Will I Have to Share Anything Personal?
No. Sharing is always optional.
Some people enjoy talking about their experience.
Others prefer quiet reflection.
Both are completely welcome.
What If Big Emotions Come Up?
Emotions sometimes surface during creative experiences, and that's completely okay. Emotions are a sign of release and they don’t need to have meaning. Acknowledge them and let them go.
Everyone experiences the session differently, and participants are encouraged to respect one another's space and process. There is no expectation that everyone's experience will look the same.
You're always welcome to pause, take a break, step outside, move your body, or simply continue painting.
Nothing is forced. Nothing needs to be shared.
You're encouraged to move at your own pace.
What if I need to take a break?
That's completely okay. You're encouraged to listen to your body throughout the experience.
You're free to step back, step outside, stretch, get some water, take a seat in the entrance area or take a break whenever you need at any point during the session.
This experience is about listening to yourself—not pushing through discomfort.
Is This Therapy?
No — this is not therapy, though it can feel therapeutic.
Paint & Release Co. offers somatic-inspired creative experiences, not clinical mental health services. It’s a supportive space for expression, but it does not replace professional therapy.
Can I Come Alone?
Yes, in fact many people do.
Paint & Release sessions are welcoming spaces where individuals, friends, and small groups can all feel comfortable. You choose how you want to show up.
Some people attend for personal creative time, while others come with friends to share the experience together.
Many people leave having met someone new. Others simply enjoy sharing a quiet creative space with people they've never met before.
If you’re looking for a quieter, more personal experience, you may want to explore Melissa’s guided 1:1 sessions.
What Should I Bring or Wear?
You don’t need to look or feel a certain way — just come as you are.
Wear something comfortable that you don’t mind getting small amounts of paint on.
Wear comfortable shoes. You can also choose to be barefoot or wear socks.
Many participants choose casual clothing that allows them to move freely while painting and tend to leave their shoes and personal items in the entrance room.
Aprons and materials are provided.
You can also bring water or snacks if you feel these would add to your comfort and experience.
What Materials Are Provided?
Everything is provided, including large-scale painting surfaces, paints, brushes, aprons, and creative tools. Just arrive as you are—we'll take care of the rest.
How Do I Get My Painting Home?
Paintings are typically still wet by the end of the session. If you feel uncomfortable bringing your painting home after our session, we have the following options:
Pick your painting up within 7 days of your session
Add-on a digital photo sent to you
Add on a delivery option to have your painting mailed to you
Is the studio accessible?
Yes.
The studio is accessible, and seating is always available if you'd prefer not to stand throughout the session.
If standing for the full session isn't comfortable for you, you're welcome to sit, take breaks, or move at your own pace throughout the experience.
If you require a wheelchair ramp, please let us know at least 24 hours before your session so we have time so we can have everything ready for you when you arrive.
If you have any accessibility needs or questions before your visit, please don't hesitate to reach out. We're happy to work with you to make your experience as comfortable and welcoming as possible.
What Many People Discover
No two Paint & Release experiences are exactly alike.
People describe leaving with all kinds of experiences.
A quieter mind.
A lighter body.
A renewed sense of creativity.
A fresh perspective.
A feeling of accomplishment.
Or simply the joy of having spent time creating without expectations.
However your experience unfolds, many people leave with a little more space than they arrived with.
Not because they created the perfect painting—
but because they gave themselves permission to create.
